LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - A case of the Zika Virus has been confirmed in the Gateway City by the Laredo Health Department as a pregnant woman has tested positive.
The Laredo Health Department is continuing to survey the area for the Zika virus.
The health department says the exposure was not here but rather outside of the city.
Right now health officials are monitoring the mother and the baby.
Health department director Dr. Hector Gonzalez says although the mother is not ill from the virus, they still need to monitor her and the baby since Zika does cause birth defects.
Gonzalez says, “We're working with the mom and her doctor, making sure we do all the testing and prepare for the birth and that the child is healthy. Right now, everything is normal which is great, but this is exactly what we want to do as soon as we test anyone suspected or pregnant women. And we're screening all pregnant women, so that then we can take the actions and follow them throughout the pregnancy."
The health department continues to test mosquitoes in the area but, so far none have received any positive matches.
The Zika breeding season is upon us, so the health department is asking residents to continue to prevent the spread of mosquitoes by getting rid of standing water and keeping yards clean.
