Step outside, breathe the fresh air, and don't let the news get you down - Washington Post

Dana Milbank and others need to be reminded that if you let someone or something that has victimized you continue to affect your life, then that someone or something will have won [“Trump actually is making us crazy,” Sunday Opinion, Sept. 24].

Chances are, many people’s aches, anxieties and other symptoms may have already been present to some degree, and President Trump’s election simply brought them to the fore.

Rather than continuing to be victimized, take action. See a doctor, as Milbank did, and address the symptoms head-on, or make another change in your life to help keep perspective.

Exercising and spending time in nature on a regular basis are just two suggestions.

Don’t let one person or event continue to victimize you.

Oprah for president? Winfrey tweets article making the case for her to run in 2020 - EW.com

Will Donald Trump’s biggest competition in the 2020 election come from Oprah Winfrey?

Winfrey sparked just that kind of speculation on Thursday after she thanked New York Post columnist John Podhoretz for an article he wrote titled “Democrats’ best hope for 2020: Oprah.”

“Thanks for your VOTE of confidence!” Winfrey wrote on Twitter.

Despite the endorsement, Winfrey is not planning to run for office. “She was just thanking the reporter, she is not running for office,” a representative told TheWrap.

In his column, Podhoretz cites Winfrey’s 60 Minutes debut this week, where she tackled the growing divide in America, as part of the reason she’d be an ideal option for voters. “Listening, asking, speaking without judgment, trying to find common ground — it was a superb performance by Oprah, and I use the word ‘performance’ advisedly. She was dazzling in exactly the way that Oprah could always be dazzling, finding a tone appropriate for the moment without being heavy-handed,” Podhoretz wrote (Winfrey’s segment included both Trump voters and Hillary Clinton voters).

He added, “If any figure in the United States bears watching over the next couple of years as our political culture continues the radical transformation that led to the election of Donald Trump, it’s Oprah. I believe she’s uniquely positioned, should she wish to commit herself, to seek the Democratic nomination for president and challenge Trump in 2020.”

Winfrey has often downplayed and outright denied that she will ever run for public office in the future. “I will never run for public office,” she said to THR last year.

But she has spoken out about Trump. Before the election last year, Winfrey urged people to go out and vote for Clinton, despite any reservations they may have felt toward her.

“This is what I really want to say: All the people, I hear this all the time. You get in conversations — and there’s not a person in this room who hasn’t been in the same conversation — where people say, ‘I just don’t know if I like her.’ She not coming over your house!” Winfrey told T.D. Jakes in an interview. “You don’t have to like her. You don’t have to like her. Do you like this country? Do you like this country? You better get out there and vote. Do you like freedom and liberty? Do you like this country? Okay. Do you like democracy or do you want a demagogue? Okay.”

Last year, after the election, Winfrey posted a photo of Trump meeting with President Barack Obama to discuss the transfer of power with the caption, “Everybody take a deep breath! #HopeLives!” Winfrey was slammed for the comment on social media and later explained how she “couldn’t breathe after the election” and found Trump’s meeting with Obama encouraging.

Podhoretz isn’t the first person to suggest Winfrey should run in 2020. In August, filmmaker Michael Moore suggested Democrats needed to “run a beloved American in 2020” to oppose Trump and cited Winfrey among the options. “Who wouldn’t vote for Tom Hanks for President of the United States? C’mon! Or Oprah!”

'When A Mob Panics, You Can't Think': Survivor On Mumbai Stampede - NDTV

New Delhi:  A Mumbai commuter who survived the stampede that killed 22 this morning, describes how she kept herself calm amid "panic and chaos and an insane crowd" on a railway bridge at Elphinstone station after just a 20-minute rain. When she somehow managed to come out, she saw bodies.

Shruti Lokre was on the overbridge and saw the crowd suddenly increasing until she couldn't breathe properly. "It was just a 20-minute rainfall that made people halt. It is a British-era construction that shakes every time a train passes. There was no exit for us, the crowd was carrying you," she told NDTV on the phone.

"The crowd was increasing, there was no help...We couldn't breathe, we were falling on each other, there was panic. When a mob panics, you can't think. I am discounting all the groping because I had to survive. We were trying to get out. There was lack of information and lack of crowd management, then a rumour that the bridge is falling, the bridge is breaking," she shared.
 

Elphinstone Station Stampede: There were more than the usual people on the bridge at the time.

In tweets, Ms Lokre said: "Before I realised, I was a part of that stampede. Saw bodies being taken out."

The stampede took place around 10.30 am, when four trains arrived at the same time and a crowd surged over the narrow bridge connecting the Elphinstone Road and Parel stations. Sudden heavy rain made a bad situation worse, as a few slipped, leading to the tragedy.

Ms Lokre tweeted: "The only way to not give up on hope was to give hope to someone else. It's gonna be alright, we will make it. Breathe, keep breathing, look that guy is helping us. Don't worry, I am here. We are in it together. Just few more minutes. This!"

She also commented: "You don't realise when the mob turns into a stampede. It happens in front of you, you become a part of it. Panic and chaos and insane crowd."

Railways Minister Piyush Goyal has ordered an inquiry. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to the families of deceased and all the medical expenses of the injured will be borne by government.

She added: 'It took him a long time to recover and affected his emotional state, he was weak for a couple of months and not himself, I was really worried.'

Overwhelmed: Speaking to ITV's Lorraine on Friday, she said: 'It's been terrible. 'He was getting really, really bad, day after day and at some point he said, "I can't breathe, I can't breathe" '

Concern: She added: 'It took him a long time to recover and affected his emotional state, he was weak for a couple of months and not himself, I was really worried'

The professional dancer then revealed that Ben decided to try a vegan diet to see if that would help. 

'We decided to go vegan , he needs to cleanse his diet. After a month on it, he feels so good after three days he went straight in the gym,' she said.

She added that it was hard looking after Mila when Ben was sick, telling Lorraine: 'It's difficult when one parent is ill, Ben is such a hands-on dad, he's incredible.'

Ben, who also has twins with his ex wife, said: ‘It’s funny, when you’re told you have a life-threatening illness all you can think about are the people you love.  

'I didn’t think about anything materialistic or all the lovely things we have, I was just worried that I wouldn’t live to see my daughters grow up. 

'When I eventually got home, I bawled my eyes out – it hit me how scary the whole situation had been.’

'I took time to get back into shape, doing yoga, dancing. I couldn't be on a diet, I was breastfeeding, it took 10 months. 

'You have to enjoy your baby, it's not about fitting into your skinny jeans.'

Cardi B Details NYPD Chokehold Incident: 'I Couldn't Breathe' - V-103 - The People's Station

Cardi B has no time for the NYPD.

After recently tweeting, then deleting, that a New York City police officer placed in her in a chokehold during a traffic altercation, the chart-topping rapper has detailed the incident during a radio interview.

Cardi B explained that it all started with a case of road rage during a traffic jam that escalated to the point that she got out of her car to confront the other driver, who also got out of his car.

She admits to hitting the other car’s window and throwing a bottle of water at the driver when her cousin (a passenger in Cardi B’s car) got out to confront other driver.

“Out of nowhere a (police officer) put me in a chokehold with my hand on my back like a chicken wing,” she said (via XXL). “And I couldn’t breathe, and I couldn’t believe it because… there’s two men that are about to square up, but you’re so p—- you won’t even hold back the men, you’re gonna put the female in a chokehold.”

The rapper went on to explain why she decided to delete the tweets and not discuss the incident with the cops.

“What bothers me the most is, yes, the police had been calling me, NYPD had been calling me, they want me to talk about it,” she said. “They had went to my family house—and I don’t really wanna make a statement ’cause I ain’t never talk to no (police) before, and even if I did talk, are they gonna even do anything about it? Most likely not, so why would I waste my time?”

“And what I don’t like is, they told my mother if she don’t make a statement, we gonna release a statement,” Cardi B. added. “And it’s just like, okay, more or less. And the statement they drop is, NYPD found no evidence of Cardi B’s claims. And it’s like, how you gon’ find evidence when you don’t know where it happened?”

David A. Schwartz, MD, MS Hyg, FCAP, clinical professor of Pathology at the Medical College of Georgia, explains how researchers from all over the world have come together to share their research on Zika virus.

Interview Transcript (modified slightly for readability):

“This outbreak, this pandemic, in my experience, has been very unusual because investigators all over the world, like at this meeting, have been in very close collaboration with one another. We’ve been sharing results freely; we’ve even been sharing unpublished results, which is a fairly new phenomenon in my experience. And, of course, I’m an editor of medical journals, and the medical journals have been doing everything they can to rapidly publish the results of investigators, like myself and my colleagues, and to make them available largely free of charge on the internet. For instance, some of the data that I’m talking with you about today, and data from my colleagues and people who I am very familiar with, recently published their work in this journal—this is the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. That’s published by the College of American Pathologists, and this is actually the first peer-reviewed journal that is largely devoted to the subject of the Zika virus. I happened to have edited this issue. These articles were published very quickly after they were submitted to me as the editor. We’re trying to get this information out to investigators around the world as quickly as possible so that it helps them design further studies to understand the Zika virus.

My co-investigators and I published our placental pathology research in [this issue of Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine]. I’m from Atlanta, and my colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control published an article in here also looking at placental pathology, and, in fact, we found the same results; we confirmed each other’s results independently. We have, in this issue, some physicians who are very in the leadership of the blood bank system in the United States, who are talking about the effects of Zika virus on the blood supply in terms of transfusion and organ donation. We have people in here talking about the microbiology of Zika virus, from Yale University. We have authors who are talking about the biology of Zika virus as a representative of the group that it belongs to, called the flaviviruses. We have people talking about the role of pathologists and medical examiners in identifying outbreaks like Zika virus. We have authors from Europe who are describing the findings in fetuses, in stillborn infants, and the pathology in the brain of Zika virus. It’s really an amazing group of people who have contributed to this; I’m very proud of this.”

Dalam foto itu, Niki—sapaan akrab Nikita Mirzani—mengenakan busana minim berwarna putih. Ia berpose duduk sambil merentangkan kedua tangannya. Pose sensual itu membuat sejumlah netizen terpesona. Namun, sebagian lainnya mengaku risih melihat foto itu.

Mother guilty of purposefully making children sick - Newshub

A mother has been found guilty of child neglect after purposefully making her children sick so she could take them for more than 100 unnecessary medical checks.

She was accused of doing it for the attention during her trial this week in the Auckland High Court.

Police began investigating the mother in October 2015 after her son was taken to hospital struggling to breathe. She had taken three videos of him on her phone to show the medical staff.

Looking back they found the mother had presented her daughter more than 100 times between 2012 and 2014 for alleged fevers, rashes and seizures, which the Crown said were "lies".

The mother also was accused of forcing her son and daughter to ingest drugs colchicine, limotrigine and midazolam, as well as a coin and a button battery.

The defendant also allegedly deliberately suffocated her children to warrant medical visits.

On Friday a jury found the woman was guilty on six of the charges of ill treatment or neglect of a child, and not guilty of two charges of ill treatment or neglect of a child.

Crown prosecutor Mark Harborow said she "thrived on interacting with medical professionals. She thrived on the buzz of the emergency - the blood was pumping, adrenalin flowing. Sirens, lights... everything.

"She suffocated her son twice in a 24-hour-period. Not only did she do that, but she videoed him as he lay lifeless struggling to breathe. Why? We don't know.

"Perhaps she wanted to re-engage with the medical world - a world she had been very much a part of with her daughter. Perhaps she wanted attention. She got attention but it wasn't in the way she envisaged - the police became involved and it all unravelled for her."

Defence lawyer Susan Gray argued the defendant's children did suffer from genuine illnesses to which her client reacted.

"She is an extremely anxious mother, she overreacted, she catastrophised and she may have behaved in a way different to other parents.

"She's one of those parents who rush off to the hospital at the sign of a snuffle. That behaviour is magnified because of her behavioural issues.

"It's possible she was doing her conscientious best - it may not always have been the right thing to do but she was doing her conscientious best."

Don't worry about 'tongue swallowing' in cardiac arrest victims - Business Insider

(Reuters Health) - If someone in cardiac arrest needs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), don’t waste time trying to move the person’s tongue out of the way, experts say.

Attempts to prevent “tongue swallowing” are a major barrier to successful bystander resuscitation of people with cardiac arrest, they warn.

In many cases of cardiac arrests in athletes in recent years, teammates, coaches and fans have tried to clear the athlete’s throat before starting resuscitation because they mistakenly believed there was a danger of tongue swallowing. This practice “is a real obstacle” to lifesaving CPR, researchers wrote in the journal Heart Rhythm.

“There is a gap between what the medical community knows and practices regarding CPR and what is common in society,” study coauthor Dana Viskin of Tel Aviv University in Israel told Reuters Health by email.

A cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack. In a heart attack, an artery in the heart becomes blocked, and some of the heart muscle begins to die because it is not getting enough oxygen. In cardiac arrest, the heart can’t pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. The person becomes unresponsive and either gasps or doesn’t breathe at all.

Viskin and colleagues searched for videos online that showed cardiac arrests during athletic events, including when the first team member began to help, when medical aid arrived, and when and what type of rescue maneuvers were used.

They found 29 videos from 1990 to 2017 that clearly showed the rescue process. Overall, 15 players survived. The videos often showed teammates attempting to “open the airway” to prevent tongue swallowing or choking, sometimes shoving fingers in the throat or pulling at the tongue vigorously to move it out of the way. The researchers also found that media coverage related to the videos sometimes mistakenly reported the importance of preventing tongue-swallowing in these situations.

Many of the videos posted online had millions of views, which could mean that many viewers are learning incorrect ways to address and administer CPR in these situations, Viskin added.

By contrast, the “hands-only CPR demo video” by the American Heart Association (http://bit.ly/2xxOBjH) and the “learn hands-only CPR” video from the American Red Cross (http://bit.ly/2xykBUS) have far fewer views.

“Athletes are the tip of the iceberg, and what applies to them represents the hundreds of thousands of people who have cardiac arrests,” said Dr. Peter Kudenchuk of the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington.

Kudenchuk, who wrote a commentary published with the study, told Reuters Health by phone, “We pay attention when this strikes athletes because they’re elite, young and healthy members of society. But it occurs once every minute to someone in the U.S., often with the same scenario seen in these videos of athletes.”

Kudenchuk recommends the “No, No, GO!” technique, which first checks whether the collapsed person is conscious and whether the person is breathing normally. If the answer is “no” to both, then bystanders are advised to immediately “GO!” with chest compressions.

“In our community, the emergency dispatcher sends out an emergency response team but also instructs the person on the phone how to do CPR,” Kudenchuk said. “This is the part where the rubber meets the road to save someone.”

Viskin’s team would like to move forward with educational campaigns through the American Heart Association and Red Cross to train the general public about heart attack and CPR guidelines.

“Anyone anywhere can save somebody’s life,” Kudenchuk said. “Keep your hands with you, and you can save lives.”

Cardi B Won't Snitch on Cop Who Allegedly Put Her in Chokehold - XXLMAG.COM

A little while back, Cardi B jumped onto social media to explain that she’d been put into a chokehold by the New York Police Department. A short time later, the NYPD put out a statement saying they were unable to find any evidence of the alleged assault. Now, Cardi’s set the record straight on the matter—which she won’t be pursuing any further.

Speaking with the folks at WEDR 99 Jamz, Cardi recounts the incident before explaining why she won’t be looking to find justice in the case. Admitting she was “no angel,” Cardi says that she got into a conflict with another driver in the midst of an NYC traffic jam. When she got out of the car to confront the driver, things turned very serious very quickly.

“So I got out the car, and was like, ‘My nigga I will fuck you up!’ And he’s like ‘Bitch I will fuck you up!'” Bardi recalls. “So I started hitting his window—I did—then I threw him a bottle of water.” Things didn’t get better from there.

Within moments, Cardi’s cousin, who she was riding with at the time, jumped out of the whip to prepare to fight the driver. At this point, Cardi says she threw a bottle of water at the man about to square up with her cousin. That’s when things got even worse than they already were.

“Out of nowhere a motherfucka put me in a chokehold with my hand on my back like a chicken wing,” reveals Cardi, whose single, “Bodak Yellow” recently shot up to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “And I couldn’t breathe, and I couldn’t believe it because… there’s two men that are about to square up, but you’re so pussy you won’t even hold back the men, you’re gonna put the female in a chokehold.

“What bothers me the most is, yes, the police had been calling me, NYPD had been calling me, they want me to talk about it,” Cardi continues. “They had went to my family house—and I don’t really wanna make a statement ’cause I ain’t never talk to no 12 before, and even if I did talk, are they gonna even do anything about it? Most likely not, so why would I waste my time?”

That wasn’t the end of Cardi’s problems with the NYPD, either. “And what I don’t like is, they told my mother if she don’t make a statement, we gonna release a statement. And it’s just like, okay, more or less.  And the statement they drop is, NYPD found no evidence of Cardi B’s claims. And it’s like, how you gon’ find evidence when you don’t know where it happened?” Cardi says.

She goes on to explain she was barely even sure where her alleged assault took place and that the cops releasing that sort of statement—one which she deems inaccurate and incomplete—is why she doesn’t trust the police, calling them the biggest gang in New York City.
