As it goes about relaunching its The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo franchise, Sony Pictures is looking at Uruguay-born Fede Alverez to direct a new installment, The Girl in the Spider Web, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Alverez, repped by WME and Anonymous Content, enjoyed a hit this summer when his horror pic Don't Breathe, from Sony's Screen Gems unit, scared up $151.4 million worldwide.
Sony 's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, released in 2011, was based on the first of the three detective novels about journalist Mikael Blomkvist and computer hacker Lisbeth Salander written by Stieg Larsson, who died in 2004. The new project would be based on the fourth book in the series, which was written by David Lagercrantz and released in 2015 and quickly acquired by Sony.
Stephen Knight is adapting the novel for the screen, with Scott Rudin, Amy Pascal, Elizabeth Cantillon and Eli Bush along with Ole Sondberg and Soren Staermose of the production company Yellow Bird, which earlier produced a trilogy of Swedish films out of the original novels. David Beaubaire will oversee production for the studio.
