POCATELLO — The Idaho State Board of Education is on the verge of finalizing the process of creating a search committee to assist with the selection of a new president at Idaho State University.

After current President Arthur Vailas announced his retirement last month, effective June 2018, the State Board of Education immediately started contacting persons of interest to serve on the search committee.

“The board will have a 13-member search committee that will include administration, faculty, student, community, alumni and non-instructional staff representation,” said State Board of Education spokesman Blake Youde. “The state board thinks it’s a group that has all interests covered.”

Youde added that the board will work with the Association of Governing Boards (AGB) to be the search consultant that will help the board run the process and conduct a national search for the new ISU president.

“The AGB is known for searching for top administrators at colleges and universities,” Youde said. “The week of Oct. 9 there will be a few members from AGB to speak with faculty, staff and students at the Meridian, Idaho Falls and Pocatello campuses.”

The work that the {span}Association of Governing Boards{/span} will do includes listening to ISU stakeholder groups and then listing the desired qualities and professional qualifications as the first major marker of the selection process, Youde said.

The State Board of Education expects the job posting for the position to be publicly available by the end of October or first of November, with an application deadline sometime around the end of the year. The new president could be selected as early as March 2018.

“Once the deadline for application has closed, the search committee will meet with each candidate,” Youde said. “This will give people some comfort in knowing that we aren’t asking two individuals (who work for AGB) who don’t live here and don’t breathe ISU every day to make a decision on ISU’s behalf.”

The search committee will give a final recommendation to the board, which will make the final the decision.

The board will also be working with ISU to implement a web page that is available from ISU’s home page to provide updates to the community about where the SBOE is at in the process.

“The search committee will keep the candidates confidential until finalists are selected,” Youde said. “One of the advantages that we have with Vailas remaining in the position until mid-June is that we will have some overlap, and the board fully expects there to be a period where President Vailas will be there on campus for a certain amount of time to help with the transition.”
