St. Thomas Aquinas’ Clareynze Ceria is hoping to lead by example, when it comes to trying to learn new skills throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ceria is the Valedictorian of 2020’s Saints, and as part of her prepared speech to her fellow students, she’s encouraging students as well as all community members to use our newly-found free time to develop new skills and to keep learning.

“During this challenging time, I’m focusing more on myself and I’m trying to make the most of it. The pandemic has given me the opportunity to reflect on my actions, and I’ve tried to do different things like trying to learn guitar, how to paint and I’ve started gardening.”

“I know it’s a challenging time for all of us, but let’s try to make the best of it. Keep yourself busy. Learn new things. Read some books. Don’t spend all of your time behind a screen. Do something new that will make you happy, and that will help you grow as a person.”

Ceria will pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Seven Generations Education Institute in September. She says she’s looking forward to her post-secondary education, as she has a passion for helping people. Ceria currently works as a Dietary Aid at Pinecrest.

"Ever since I was young, I've always wanted to become a nurse. I look highly to the nurses and doctors and I like taking care of people. I want to do something that could make a difference in other people's lives. I think nursing is one of the most rewarding professions there is because you can help save lives, bring smiles and provide help and care to others."

As well as receiving her graduating class’ Valedictorian honours, Ceria served as the KCDSB’s Student Trustee for the board between 2018 and 2020. In her final report, she thanked Trustees for the opportunity.

“This being my last report, I want to thank the Trustees, Board members and my fellow students for giving me the opportunity of being the voice of students. It’s an honour to work and grow closer with each and every one of you, and I will miss all of your smiling faces.”

The KCDSB says Student Trustees serve an essential role by being Catholic role-models and representing students in decisions about education. They are responsible for keeping students informed and leading student-focused initiatives for the Kenora Catholic District School Board.

The Kenora Catholic District School Board is looking for your input on the return to school in September. The board is hosting a Thoughtexchange conversation to help gather ideas and opinions.

Director of Education, Derek Haime, hosted an info session last week to explain the process.

"We do accept constructive criticism all the time, which this Thoughtexchange will certainly include. There will be many successes highlighted, but there will also be some shortcomings highlighted, which we will take very seriously and try to move forward with your help," he said.

The two questions being asked are;

When we consider at-home learning during school closures, what has worked well and what do we need to improve? and, As we look forward to September, what are the most important things we should consider to ensure everyone feels safe and supported?

The Thoughtexchange conversation is happening now and will be open until June 24. Participants are invited to revisit the Thoughtexchange often as new thoughts and ideas come about.

How local school boards adapted to COVID-19 - kenoraonline.com - KenoraOnline.com

It’s been a memorable school year to say the least, between provincial labour negotiations, teacher strikes and a worldwide pandemic to top it off.

It’s been over 100 days since the COVID-19 pandemic began and since local students have been in the classroom, and students are now preparing to graduate virtually, opposed to walking across the stage to receive their diplomas.

But students aren’t the only ones who have had their school years upended by the pandemic. Directors of Education for both local school boards, Sherri-Lynne Pharand with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board and Derek Haime with the Kenora Catholic District School Board, say their staff have put in amazing work over the last few months.

“We’ve done the best that we can since March,” said Haime. “Staff have worked amazingly to adapt quickly to the home-learning model, as challenging as it is. It’s not as satisfying as face-to-face learning, but people have really worked hard to make the best of it. I’m really proud of everyone.”

“I’m really proud of the work of our staff. During the March Break, there were a few staff and myself who worked to begin building a platform to support distance learning, to support our teachers and support staff. It’s a very comprehensive platform,” explained Pharand.

“It’s taken the whole system. Every single staff member have had an important role to play in making sure that we’re able to think about how we work differently, and how we can learn differently,” added Pharand.

Pharand joined the KPDSB in January, just two months before the COVID-19 pandemic. Her appointment came after Sean Monteith left the role in January of 2020, after serving as a Superintendent for the Lakehead District School Board.

“It was a really exciting time. I was really looking forward to starting my new role and getting to meet all of our staff. I spent the first six weeks travelling to each of our school board areas visiting schools and staff throughout our district,” added Pharand.

“One of the things that drew me to Keewatin-Patricia was the innovation that I would always see in the media or hear about in education circles, so for me, early in the year it was an opportunity to see some of our unique programs in place to meet the needs of our students across our system.”

This was to be Haime’s first full-year in his role as Director for the KCDSB, after taking over for Phyllis Eikre in February of 2019. Although the year was cut short, Haime noted the board was able to launch a number of new initiatives. They include:

- A Spiritual Development Day in September,
- The launch of a free Anishinaabe languages app,
- The launch of the Wiikondim Feasting and Pow Wows book with Elder Isobel White,
- A new ski and snowboarding program for Grade 4 to 8 students,
- A new student journalism program in partnership with Q104 and Kenora Miner,
- A Dynamic Directions Career Fair with community partners and employers,
- A partnership with the Kenora Youth Wellness Hub to provide educational supports,
- The board was the national winner of the Toonies for Tuition Challenge,
- A ThoughtExchange Process for future COVID-19 planning with student input,
- The culmination of provincial labour negotiations,

“We forget that we had almost two-thirds of the school year under our belt before the March break, and it was an amazing school year,” said Haime. “I’m so proud of the parents, the students, staff and community members for coming together. It was a fantastic year.”

Haime added that the KCDSB will be giving out Director’s Awards of Excellence for each staff member and each KCDSB school, to recognize their efforts throughout the pandemic.

COVID-19 postpones Canada Day events in Kenora - KenoraOnline.com

COVID-19 postpones Canada Day events in Kenora - KenoraOnline.com

6:23:00 AM Add Comment

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced staff with the City of Kenora to postpone Canada Day’s events and fireworks to the August Long Weekend at the earliest.

Staff say July 1’s activities have been cancelled due to the extension of Ontario’s State of Emergency until June 29, which has created too short of a window for staff to organize this year’s events.

“Unfortunately, we have made the decision to cancel our Canada Day festivities and also the fireworks for this year, given the current pandemic. But that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t celebrate at home with your own family,” said Special Events Coordinator for the City of Kenora, Morgan Seller.

Tourism Kenora says they are currently planning to host this year’s Canada Day fireworks over the August long weekend, depending on the state of the pandemic at that time. Staff have also been working with community partners to secure a strong fireworks display to celebrate the community.

“We are hoping to have announcements on the future celebration, but at this point, we are asking everyone to celebrate at home and enjoy July 1,” Seller added.

Other COVID-19 updates from the City of Kenora include:

City Hall and Operations Facility – City Hall and the Operations Facility will reopen to the public on August 4. You are encouraged to contact staff to arrange an appointment.

Kenora Recreational Centre Day Camp – The Awesome Adventures Day Camp will resume on July 6 with safety restrictions. Outdoor swimming lessons will take place in July and August, respecting the restrictions that are in place. Lessons will begin on July 20.

Recreation Centre Fitness Centre – Plans are being made to reopen the Fitness Centre with a limited number of visitors during set time-frames, with cleaning, staffing and capacity protocols. This will not open until Ontario moves into phase 3 of reopening.

Recreation Centre pool – The pool is scheduled to reopen in September, which is in-line with normal summer maintenance.

Walking Track and other programming – The Walking Track has reopened with social distancing and cleaning measures. Fitness classes and other programming will follow the provincial easing of restrictions.

Whitecap Pavilion rentals – The majority of this summer’s events and bookings under the Whitecap have been cancelled.

Discovery Centre – The Discovery Centre has reopened with social distancing measures.

Keewatin Arena – Summer ice has been cancelled for the 2020 season.

Libraries – Libraries are offering curbside pickup services at this time. A reopening date is expected in phase 3 with social distancing and capacity guidelines.

Household Hazardous Waste Days – Will resume on July 23, and will run every Thursday until October 15.

As well, the city reopened public beaches and the Rotary Splash Park last week. Residents are asked to keep 2 metres away from others, wear a face covering whenever possible, to limit group sizes, to bring hand sanitizer and to wash your hands regularly.

The city’s outdoor public washrooms are cleaned twice daily, but not throughout the day. Staff say that thorough hand washing is a must, and the use of hand sanitizer is recommended. The washroom at the Central Ball Park will remain closed due to construction.

Public washrooms that are being regularly sanitized include:

- Keewatin Beach,
- Portage Bay,
- Beatty Park,
- Norman Beach,
- Millennium Ball Park (A&W)
- Jaffray Melick Ball Park,
- Garrow Beach,
- McLeod Park,
- Coney Island.

The city’s playgrounds and the outdoor exercise park at Garrow Beach remain closed until further notice.

Non-Alcoholic Craft Beer Makers Athletic, Ceria Expand Distribution Footprints - Brewbound.com

Non-Alcoholic Craft Beer Makers Athletic, Ceria Expand Distribution Footprints - Brewbound.com

7:23:00 AM Add Comment

Athletic Brewing Company and Ceria Brewing Company, two up-and-coming non-alcoholic craft beer companies, are expanding their footprints into several new states.

The moves follow both companies receiving investments earlier this year, with Stratford, Connecticut-based Athletic closing on a $17.5 million Series B funding round round, which brings its total capital raised to a little more than $20 million, and Arvada, Colorado-based Ceria raising $500,000, bringing its total raised to more than $5.5 million.

Athletic and Ceria are vying for more sales in a non-alcoholic beer segment in which dollar sales in off-premise retailers increased 23.3%, to $131.9 million, in 2019.

Off-premise dollar sales of non-alcoholic beer year-to-date have increased 40.7%, to $64.7 million, according to IRI data shared by Bump Williams Consulting. Driving some of that growth in the segment has been Heineken’s non-alcoholic offering, Heineken 0.0, which has increased dollar sales 318.5%, to more than $18.1 million, year-to-date through May 17 in multi-outlet and convenience store retailers tracked by IRI.

Nevertheless, the non-alcoholic beer segment trails other segments, with year-to-date dollar sales of cider ($171.7 million), the next closest segment, more than double those of non-alcoholic beer.

During the COVID-19 purchasing period (March 8 through May 24), dollar sales of non-alcoholic beer have increased 39.1%, to nearly $40 million, compared to the same time last year.

“I think it’s still just the discovery phase,” Athletic co-founder Bill Shufelt told Brewbound.

With an eye on capturing more of those sales, Athletic and Ceria announced this week major territory expansions.

As of June 1, Athletic’s non-alcoholic craft beers are available in

  • Texas via Ben E. Keith;
  • Washington and Oregon (and Sonoma and Marin counties in California) via Columbia Distributing;
  • California via Sheehan Family Companies’ Craft Los Angeles and Craft San Diego (from Los Angeles to the Mexico border);
  • New Jersey via Hunterdon (Sheehan);
  • Rhode Island via Horizon Beverage.

Additionally, Athletic will launch in Arizona via Crescent Crown on August 1.

Shufelt said many of the company’s existing chain partners — including Whole Foods, Wegmans, Trader Joe’s and Total Wine — are adding his company’s products to their locations in those expansion states.

“We’ll be expanding Wegmans into New Jersey, Trader Joe’s into Texas, and will be launching Safeway/Albertsons September 1 in the Pacific Northwest,” Shufelt said.

Helping supply that expansion is Athletic’s addition of a former Ballast Point production facility that came online May 15 and will have more than 100,000 barrels of capacity.

Shufelt added that Athletic’s e-commerce sales and shipments across the U.S. have helped insulate the business from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, Athletic has donated 10% of its sales to the Restaurant Relief Fund, donating more than $100,000 to date.

Meanwhile, Ceria Brewing, which was founded by Blue Moon Belgian White creator Keith Villa and his wife Jodi in 2018, announced a series of distribution partnerships to sell its Grainwave Belgian White Ale and Indiewave IPA non-alcoholic beer offerings in bars, restaurants, and grocery and liquor stores in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

In Massachusetts, Ceria will partner with Burke Distributing Company in the Boston area, Atlas Distributing in central Massachusetts, and Commercial Distributing in the western half of the state.

In Wisconsin, Ceria will work with the Frank Beverage Group, including Beer Capitol Distributing in Milwaukee, Frank Beer Distributors in Madison, and La Crosse Beverage in La Crosse.

Finally, in Pennsylvania, Ceria’s wholesalers include Banko Beverage Co. in Lehigh and Northampton counties, Muller in Philadelphia, Wilson-McGinley in the Pittsburgh area and LT Verrastro in the northeastern part of the state.

“These are our first distributor relationships for our NA craft beers and, as such, represent a substantial step forward for Ceria Brewing,” Keith Villa said in a press release.

“[I]f you look back just two years ago, NA beer represented about 0.5% of the total beer business and is projected to be 1-1.5% by 2025,” Ceria Brewing VP of business development Greg Miller added. “We look forward to becoming the leader in this strong performing category that has a very bright future ahead of it.”

Earlier this year, Ceria launched its two non-alcoholic beer offerings in more than 200 Total Wine locations across 24 states.

Grainwave and Indiewave both check in at less than 0.5% ABV, and 77 and 99 calories, respectively. Ceria originally launched with THC- and CBD-infused versions of its non-alcoholic beers, which are still being produced and sold in Denver area dispensaries.

The Digital Sector's Triumph - Cover Story - Tempo

SAVITRI Amir, who has kept an online store since early this year, certainly feels the joy of e-commerce. Her hijab (headscarves), which she offers on two of the country’s biggest e-commerce platforms, Tokopedia and Shopee, apparently appeal to buyers. After only five months, her sales now amount to millions of rupiah per month. She is considering expanding her business, but she has no capital. “So far, I’ve been using my own money,” said the mother of two when we contacted her on Friday, May 29.

Savitri only learned recently that the online store where she sells her products partners with several banks to provide online businesses with capital. She sees an opportunity in the arrangement. “Who knows, it may help the business grow,” she said.

One of these banks is Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), among the country’s largest banks. In mid-May the bank entered the market by providing capital for online vendors, a business niche that was initially made use of by fintech start-ups. In the early stage, BRI partnered with Shopee and Grab. “In the next stage, BRI will also work with Tokopedia and Gojek,” said BRI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sunarso in mid-May.

When BRI launched its Kredit Usaha Rakyat Digital (people’s digital business loan), Sunarso said the step was part of the company’s breakthrough in channeling its loans. BRI followed in the footsteps of Bank Mandiri, which began funding online retailers in February.

Players in the financial sector have long believed that digital innovation would become the key in doing business in this sector. They have prepared strategies, particularly for using digital technology as a supporting tool for transactions. The coronavirus pandemic cut short the planning stage. Besides functioning as a supporting tool, digital technology has turned into a new business model.

•••

Through a virtual conference on May 18, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani explained the plan to restore the national economy which is hit by the pandemic. In the third quarter of this year, or in July, the government predicts that the economy will again improve, along with relaxed large-scale social restrictions (PSBB). At the same time, the government is expanding its economic stimuli to boost consumption among the middle class, among others, by distributing food and travel discount coupons via applications. In the fourth quarter, the government hopes that unemployment and poverty rates, which have gone up due to Covid-19, will improve.

While the government works on stimuli and arranges health protocols in the new normal era, industries are preparing to do their business in a new way. According to a number of management consultant firms, businesses will rely on the use of digital technology. Bank Mandiri Chief Economist Andry Asmoro says besides tech companies, the financial sector—such as banking—is the most prepared to adapt to the use of digital technology in the new normal era in this country. Asmoro explains that developments in the banking sector have been going in the direction of the digital era. “Covid-19 has accelerated the move toward this direction,” he said on May 28.

The banking sector—particularly large banks with massive capital for tech spending—Asmoro explained, seems to be enjoying their digital services’ advantages during the pandemic. It is true that these digital services will do less well after the Covid-19 vaccine is available. “But in the future, the banking sector will still rely on digital (technology),” he said. “In-person services are still needed only in remote areas.”

The banks’ strategy to rely on digital services during the pandemic is seen in the rise of transaction traffic. Bank Negara Indonesia’s (BNI) digital transaction growth in the first quarter of 2020 rose 31 percent compared to the same period in 2019. BNI Mobile Banking’s transaction growth has even reached 84.4 percent compared to the first quarter of 2019, to 63 million transactions at the value of Rp103.4 trillion. The rise in the use of digital services is also recorded among corporate customers, with BNI Direct’s transaction volume increasing by 55 percent in the first quarter of 2020, compared to the same period in 2019.

BRI customer transactions via Internet banking or BRI Mobile in March rose by 61 percent compared to January. Meanwhile, Bank Mandiri’s financial transactions via its digital platform reached 393 million throughout the first quarter of 2020. “In the future, the interaction between customers and banks will decline. This is why the banking sector must continue to develop the digital technology, in accordance with the wishes of customers,” said Bank Mandiri CEO Royke Tumillar during the Ngobrol@Tempo event on May 29.

Private banks, such as Bank Central Asia (BCA), have also experienced a rise in digital transactions. BCA had a 91-percent year-on-year growth in mobile banking transactions, or as many as 1.286 billion transactions in the first quarter of 2020. Likewise, Internet banking transactions have risen by 24 percent to 740 million transactions. “Around 98 percent of BCA’s banking transactions are via digital banking services,” said BCA Executive Vice President of Secretariat and Corporate Communication Hera F. Haryn on May 28.

•••

Prior to the pandemic, digital platforms were used more as supporting tools for banking services. Today, such platforms function as a new foundation for the banking industry. The transformation is reflected in BRI’s decision to enter the digital microcredit program (KUR), to fund online retailers on Shopee and Grab. “The initiative is hoped to ease the public in accessing KUR financing as well as improve the absorption of KUR to assist micro, small and medium enterprises in surviving during the pandemic,” said BRI CEO Sunarso.

The digital KUR is BRI’s follow-up step in moving its business into the digital realm. In December last year, BRI launched the online loan platform, Ceria, which can be used for transactions on Tokopedia, Panorama JTB, and Dinomarket. Ceria was launched online three months after BRI, in partnership with Traveloka, introduced the PayLater Card, a ‘shop now, pay later’ service like Ceria.

BRI is also preparing to soon launch Web Pasar, a platform that facilitates traditional market vendors in selling their products online. Banks nearest to such markets will be given the additional task of storing items bought by consumers before they are delivered by couriers. “Hopefully 5,000 markets will have entered the ecosystem by September,” said BRI Micro Businesses Director Supari on May 28.

But Bank Mandiri has made its move even earlier. Mandiri launched its capital loan service on the marketplace in February, which they call Kredit Usaha Micro (micro business loan), by enlisting Tokopedia and Bukalapak. Bank Mandiri aims to channel Rp1 trillion in loans to online businesses. “In line with our five-year plan, we will give massive support to digital micro, small and medium enterprises,” said Mandiri CEO Royke Tumilaar.
