Long-lost notes breathe new life into Freeman, Bible missing girls case - Miami News Record

Long-lost notes breathe new life into Freeman, Bible missing girls case - Miami News Record

Craig County Sheriff discovers long-lost investigation notes in case of missing Welch girls.

VINITA — A long-lost set of investigation notes discovered recently is said to be pushing the case forward in the disappearance of two Craig County teenage girls who have been missing for 18 years.

Ashley Freeman and Lauria Bible were 16 years old when they celebrated Ashley’s birthday with a sleepover at the Freeman home in Welch on Dec. 29, 1999.

“Craig County Sheriff Heath Winfrey has provided investigators previous(ly) unknown notes and documents he discovered referencing the Freeman/Bible case that was left from the previous sheriff administration,” said Gary Stansill, District 12 District Attorney’s Office investigator.

Stansill said the notes were discovered in an office crate.

“These notes and documents have proven to be extremely valuable,” he said. “This information has produced leads that have produced additional leads.”

Stansill declined to release specific information on leads, motives or suspects.

“Our family hopes and prays that these new leads bring Lauria home,” said Lorene Bible, Lauria’s mother.

Stansill said he and an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agent have interviewed several people who have knowledge about the shooting deaths of Danny and Kathy Freeman and the disappearance of the girls.

“Other individuals have come forward with information, as well,” Stansill said.

There are individuals that have not been interviewed who have information about the slayings and the girls’ disappearance, he said.

“We are still asking the public if individuals have information about the case and have not recently talked to investigators to call the OSBI tip line,” Stansill said.

The recently discovered notes breathed new life into an investigation that has crisscrossed the country and into Canada and Mexico for nearly two decades.

Winfrey, who took office in January 2017, was moving into the Sheriff’s Office when the crate was discovered in a closet.

“It was just sitting on a shelf,” he said. “We weren’t digging for it — we just found it.”

After going through the documents, Winfrey quickly realized what he had, secured the documents into evidence and contacted Stansill.

“You don’t think finding something like that in a crate would push the case forward this much,” Winfrey said. “You just don’t think in a million years it would turn out leads like it did.”

In the middle of the night on Dec. 29 or the early-morning hours of Dec. 30, 1999, someone drove down the dirt driveway to the Freeman residence. An accelerant was placed near the wood-burning stove. Investigators aren’t sure how long it took, but the mobile home became engulfed in flames.

The body of Kathy Freeman, Ashley’s mother, was discovered in the charred remains of the mobile home. A bullet, according to her autopsy report, had shattered her skull. The skull of Danny Freeman, found later at the scene, also was shattered, an autopsy showed. His extensive arrowhead collection could not be located in the rubble.

No evidence of Lauria and Ashley was found at that scene, but Lauria’s car was in the Freeman driveway with the keys in the ignition.

For years, investigators worked on the premise that an intruder or intruders killed the Freemans and the girls were collateral damage.

Jeremy Jones, 43, a convicted killer and rapist who once lived in Miami, Oklahoma, was a person of interest in the Freemans’ deaths. He has never been charged in the case and is on Alabama’s death row for the murder and rape of a Turnerville, Alabama, woman.

In a confession he later recanted to the media, Jones said the girls’ bodies were in a mineshaft in Galena, Kansas. A search of the area in 2005 turned up no remains.

The Freeman family had Ashley declared legally dead in 2010, according to court records.

The OSBI is offering up to $10,000 for credible information. A private reward of $50,000 also stands.

Anyone with information is asked to call the OSBI hotline at 800-522-8017 or email tips@osbi.ok.gov.

As Zika fades from public consciousness, scientists continue to pursue the virus - Washington Post

As Zika fades from public consciousness, scientists continue to pursue the virus - Washington Post

4:12:00 AM Add Comment

While the Zika virus mostly faded from the public’s consciousness last year, it’s still a hot topic among scientists — and for good reasons.

After Zika emerged in the Western Hemisphere, it shook the Americas as reports of infections and devastating birth defects swept through Brazil and Colombia, eventually reaching the United States in 2016. In a welcome turn, the number of Zika cases in the hemisphere last year dropped dramatically in the hardest-hit areas.

But few scientists are naive enough to think we’ve seen the last of Zika. “The clock is ticking for when we will see another outbreak,” says Andrew Haddow, a medical entomologist at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Frederick, Md.

Researchers’ to-do list for tackling this once-unfamiliar virus is daunting. But progress has been made, especially in learning more about Zika’s biology and interactions with its hosts, and in developing a safe and effective vaccine.

In 2017, the epidemic lost steam because many areas have probably developed herd immunity to the virus. Zika infected a large number of people, who are now presumably immune, and those exposed provide indirect protection to people who haven’t yet encountered Zika. If the mosquito-borne virus can’t find enough people to infect, it can’t easily spread.

But Zika doesn’t rely only on mosquitoes to get around. Last year, researchers learned more about how the virus spreads through sexual intercourse.

In humans, Zika can persist in semen for close to three months, researchers learned. And Haddow and colleagues reported in the August issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases that four of eight macaques exposed to the virus vaginally developed infections, as did seven of eight macaques that received the virus via the rectum.

In the wild, animals can act as reservoirs for Zika between human outbreaks. A small number of black-striped capuchin monkeys and common marmosets in a region of Brazil with high numbers of human cases were found to carry the virus already, the first such report among Western Hemisphere monkeys.

But there’s still a lot to learn about how the virus is maintained long-term in nature, Haddow says.

Convinced that Zika is here to stay and especially concerned about its effects during pregnancy, researchers have rushed to develop vaccines.

In its first test in humans, reported online Oct. 4 in the New England Journal of Medicine, one vaccine based on DNA from the virus elicited an immune response, with 100 percent of participants developing antibodies after a three-dose regimen. Another DNA vaccine, developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is in a second round of human testing.

Attention to the virus may wane further. But the risk to public health remains, and interventions are still needed, such as ongoing monitoring that tracks Zika and other infectious diseases in pregnancy, says Denise Jamieson, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

“We’re not ready for another emerging infectious disease that may disproportionately affect pregnant women or their fetuses or babies,” she says. “And we need to be.”

FDA recommends Zika testing of donated blood, highlights GBS cases - Philippine Star

Transmission of Zika virus through blood transfusions is a growing concern, particularly if an asymptomatic individual donated blood.

The Food and Drug Administration announced recommendations to test all donated blood and blood components across the United States and its territories for the Zika virus, to mitigate the chance of transmitting the virus through transfusions.

In February, the FDA first issued guidance recommending that only areas with active Zika virus transmission screen donated blood.

“As new scientific and epidemiological information regarding Zika virus has become available, it’s clear that additional precautionary measures are necessary,” FDA’s acting chief scientist, said in a statement. “We are issuing revised guidance for immediate implementation in order to help maintain the safety of the US blood supply.”

In a conference call with reporters, the director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said that while there have not yet been any confirmed cases of such transmission, donors and health care workers must be vigilant. “Given the frequency of travel of individuals within the United States, there is the risk that people without symptoms who are infected with Zika virus could potentially donate blood and thereby transmit Zika virus.

The CDC also published new numbers on Guillain – Barre syndrome (GBS), which has been on the rise in countries affected by Zika virus.

Opinion ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1

Individuals who began exhibiting any neurologic symptoms between Jan 1, 2016, and July 31, 2016, and were suspected of possible GBS total 56. Of those 56 patients, 34 (61 percent) were found to have evidence of either Zika or another related flavivirus. Ten (18 percent) of those 56 were confirmed to have Zika virus, and one patient who received treatment for GBS died of septic shock. Thirty (88 percent) reported having an acute illness of some kind before the onset of neurologic symptoms. The figures come from the GBS Passive Surveillance System.

“Persons with signs or symptoms consistent with GBS should promptly seek medical attention,” the CDC urged. “Health care providers who evaluate patients with neurologic illnesses should consider GBS and report suspected cases to public health authorities. Residents of and travelers to Puerto Rico are advised to follow existing recommendations for prevention of Zika virus infection.

Netflix's 'The Open House' Trailer Puts A '13 Reasons Why' Star In A Spooky Situation — VIDEO - Bustle

4:48:00 PM Add Comment

Never agree to stay in a secluded house in the woods should be a no-brainer for horror movie characters by now, and yet, they just keep on doing it. Even 13 Reasons Why's Dylan Minnette isn't immune to the trope, as he illustrates in the trailer for Netflix's The Open House. The spooky thriller finds Minnette's Logan and his character's mom heading to their friend's mountain getaway after the death of the family patriarch. There's a catch, though — the house is up for sale, so every Sunday, Logan and his mom, Naomi (played by Piercey Dalton), have to leave during open house hours. What could possibly go wrong with that scenario?

If you guessed a home invader moves in, you might just be right. The Open House trailer is careful not to confirm whether or not the person terrorizing Logan and Naomi is of the supernatural variety, but it certainly feels like their tormentor is made of flesh and blood, thanks to a collection of stalker style photos. What the teaser does offer up is plenty of potential suspects, including several creepy neighbors who appear to be lurking around the home at odd hours.

Whatever is going on in The Open House, the movie definitely looks like a total scare-fest. At one point Minnette hears clanging coming from the basement, and in another scene he descends a dark staircase, only to find a walled off dead end. This mountain paradise has great views, but the house's fear factor is way too high for anything good to happen there.

Netflix on YouTube

Minnette may be best known for his role as the pensive Clay in Netflix's teen drama 13 Reasons Why, but he's no stranger to the horror genre. In 2015, he starred in Goosebumps alongside Jack Black, and even though it was a scary movie aimed at kids, you have to give Minnette props for facing down Slappy the evil ventriloquist dummy. Then, in 2016, the 21-year-old played a key role in the psychological thriller Don't Breathe.

Interestingly, Don't Breathe's premise is the exact opposite of The Open House's. The Open House appears to be a home invasion movie told from the point of view of the people being terrorized, but in Don't Breathe, Minnette played a young adult who broke into someone's house only to have the tables turned on him and his friends by the homeowner. Hopefully, his character in The Open House will have better luck, because Don't Breathe was brutal.

Open House's premise doesn't inspire much hope that Minnette's Logan isn't in for some serious terror. It's bad enough that the poor kid has just lost his father, and now he has to deal with a potential murderer living inside of his vacation home too. The mix of grief and fear is a potent one in the trailer. Right now, Open House's biggest draw is the mystery surrounding what exactly is going on in the house. Is the loss of a member of their family causing Logan and Naomi to see things that aren't there or are they in a situation where they can't trust anyone? As horror movie premise's go, that's a pretty solid one.

Open House's biggest selling point for horror fans might just be that they don't have to brave the wintry weather to head out to a theater to see it. The movie will be available on Netflix beginning Jan. 19, and the trailer's snowy imagery suggests Open House could be the perfect thriller to curl up with on a chilly night. Hey, if you have to shiver, you might as well do it for a good reason. (Having Minnette on hand as the film's curious protagonist doesn't hurt either.)

By: Norman Balassiano

During the course of my workday, I notice that people get agitated easily. Be it impatience while waiting for the light to change or the quest for a parking spot. It can be aggravating.

This aggravation is a choice. While we may not be able to choose to be completely happy, we can certainly choose to not let everyday worries get to us. We can make a conscious decision to see the bigger picture of life and not get bogged down in the small stuff.

But how do we do that?

A major component of inner peace and happiness is meditation. What is meditation exactly? When I ask friends, they really don’t know! I try to tip them off that breathing exercises and daily meditation can not only free them of everyday stresses – it can improve overall health.

“The Breath of Life”

The goal is to reach a place where you can say, “I don’t have one problem or worry in the world right now” – full and complete faith that Hashem is taking care of every one of our needs. When you find that place within yourself, you will be at peace. One of many ways to get there is exercising your respiratory system.

A few reasons people don’t breathe is because they don’t have the time – or, they don’t know how to. No time? No excuse! We are doing it all day!Plus, mastering the breath can do wonders for the mind, body, and soul. Meditation is especially effective in the morning so you can start your day with a clean slate, or at the end of a long day.

There are different methods for beginners, but try to start simple. Take as deep of a breath as possible. Do it slowly and purposefully. Meditate by yourself, even if it’s in your car for a few minutes – just make sure your phone is off and nobody is around. You need complete silence to disconnect from brain chatter.

I’ve created an effective breathing exercise I call “The Breath of Life.” It’s super easy and takes only 18 seconds per round:

Round One:Count to five as you breathe in through your nose.

Round Two: Hold that breath for five seconds.

Round Three:Count to eight as you exhale slowly through
your mouth.

By engaging your diaphragm – the double-domed sheet of muscle that acts as the top of your abdominal cavity and bottom of your thoracic cavity – you strengthen your respiratory system and the musclessurrounding those organs.

As you inhale, the diaphragm contracts, allowing your lungs to fill with air. You’ll notice that when you breathe, your abdomen expands first, then your rib cage and chest. When you exhale, your diaphragm relaxes and the air leaves your body from the chest, then the rib cage, then the abdomen. The deeper your breath, the higher in your body you’ll feel the expansion.

If you’re not used to heavy breathing like this, lie on your back and place a light object on your stomach. Breathenormally and watch the object move up and down with your breaths. This exercise will help you get in tune with your breath, making it easier to know your body’s limits. (Please consult a doctor to make sure you’re healthy enough for this type of activity.)

It’s All Relative

Everything I practice comes from real-world experience. In my line of work, people are going through hardship. So, I need to be able to deal with their stress and mine on a daily basis. Breathing and meditating helps me calm down.

Once you make it a habit, this calm can extend past that one moment. You can begin making things happen. You’ve become strong enough to turn the brain chatter on and off.

Recently, someone came to me in the midst of a panic attack.
I told him to lie down onthe floor and breathe like he was blowing out a fire. Then I told him to throw a tantrum on the floor for one minute. After he was done, I asked him to transition back to
easy breathing.

The man immediately calmed down because this breathing exercise tookhis mind off of his problem. By letting the panic pass, he proved to himself that he could overcome whatever was worrying him – and, since it was possible this time, he knew he could do the same next time.

Strap a Shark Fin to Your Head - PJ Media

Strap a Shark Fin to Your Head - PJ Media

4:48:00 PM Add Comment

Yesterday my husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary and — as one does — went out to dinner at a small, quaint Italian restaurant in the neighborhood, a place we’ve been meaning to try since we moved here a year and a half ago.

The place was lovely, the service superb, the food well balanced and we were having a great time when, from the table next to us — occupied by men in matching polos and women in business attire — came the following piece of advice “you need to do something to stand out. Strap a shark fin to your head, or something.”

This was said in an absolutely serious way, and I still can’t keep from giggling when I think of it.

As a writer, whose younger son is — or at least is supposed to be, I don’t breathe down his neck all the time — applying for engineering internships, I am familiar with the need to stand out. For most of us be it artists, job applicants, or what have you, the big problem is how to stand out in a packed field.

Sure, you might be the best space opera writer in the world, but if people have no reason to go find your books, you’ll never reach enough of an audience to make a living. Or you might be the most competent engineer in your class, but if you don’t have the contacts to put a behind-the-scenes word in with someone hiring engineers, what you’re going to end up with is trying by sheer blind luck to hit upon the combination of keywords that will get you picked up for an interview. In either case, the odds are long.

However, the advice to strap a shark fin to your head, however effective it might be at getting you attention, is terrible in the long run. You see, while you’ll certainly be looked at, if you have that shark fin sticking out of your hair, and you might even get a laugh if you announce yourself as “land shark” it is unlikely to get you a sale (I believe the people in the next table were salesmen of some sort) or a job. And even if it works for one sale and one job, it is unlikely to build a career.

It is what is known as “a gimmick.”

In art, and in writing — which I still refuse to consider as an art form, since, really, it’s more of an honest craft, like clothes making or throwing pots — gimmicks do sometimes work, or at least they work for a time. But even then, in the end, they have a way to blight your chances.

'Life is but a dream,' so breathe deep, relax & learn - The Daily Iberian

'Life is but a dream,' so breathe deep, relax & learn - The Daily Iberian

4:38:00 AM Add Comment

For the past few weeks I’ve been reflecting on life lessons from the nursery rhyme, “Row, row, row your boat.” This week finds me at the end of the verse, “Life is but a dream.”

William Shakespeare said, “Life is but a dream, within a dream.” Is it? What a game-changer to reflect on the idea that this life is about as real as the dream you had last night. Think about that for a minute. What would it mean if it were true? What would it mean if we knew for certain that we were asleep in another world dreaming our current lives?

Would we spend so much of our energy working and sacrificing ourselves?

Would we spend so much of our time worrying?

If you don’t get something right in a dream, do you wake up the next morning freaking out that you’ve messed up? Of course not. It was just a dream. When we consider the possibility that life is a dream, we can relax.

The deeply spiritual among us have something in common — they are almost always smiling. That’s because they believe that everything is going to be OK. It always has been, and it always will be. We can’t get it wrong. The lessons we’re meant to learn will be learned whether we stress out or relax. There is no stopping them.

Of course, we can’t know all of life’s mysteries. In 1 Corinthians 13:12-13 the apostle Paul puts it succinctly, “Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. Three things will last forever — faith, hope, and love — and the greatest of these is love.”

What if we’re dreaming right now? We could take a deep breath and relax. We could concentrate on loving our neighbors. Realizing that, in our essence, we are eternal, we could see this earth and this life as a place to learn. We could be safe in the knowledge that our real selves are still safely merged at home with God — because they never left there.

I’ll leave you with my New Year’s wish for you, expressed best by the brilliant Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho;

“Be present. Make love. Make tea. Avoid small talk. Embrace conversation. Buy a plant, water it. Make your bed. Make someone else’s bed. Have a smart mouth, and quick wit. Make art. Create. Swim in the ocean. Swim in the rain. Take chances. Ask questions. Make mistakes. Learn. Know your worth. Love fiercely. Forgive quickly. Let go of what doesn’t make you happy. Grow.”

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Stretch those legs. Too much sitting or lounging about could cause you to take root so make sure to set aside plenty of time for physical activity. A loved one may know just how to get you inspired and motivated today.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Put on your dancing shoes. Round up the gang to visit a club or the local watering hole after the sun goes down. Others value your opinions and sound logic and may call upon you to mediate a heated dispute.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Lead by example. You could tell people the correct way to do things, but they'll get a much clearer picture if you show them. Avoid those who are looking for a confrontation as someone may be quick to lose their temper.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Set the wheels in motion. Now is the time to put plans into action, make ideas into reality and start new projects. Convey your enthusiasm to others and you'll have not trouble enlisting support and encouragement.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22.): Follow the leader. Let someone else do the driving as they may have interesting and exciting ideas of where to go. Friends will be more than happy to offer advice or aid to repay what you have done for them in the past.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Failure is not an option. Resolve that you are going to achieve a particular goal and then do all that is in your power to make it so. Don't allow distractions to disrupt your focus or draw your attention away from the task at hand.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Grab the bull by the horns. Take initiative and be assertive when tackling difficult problems and you'll easily overcome all obstacles. Be direct and forthright when expressing your opinions to make things clear.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don't pretend to be something you're not. You're more likely to win someone over by simply being yourself rather than putting on airs. Telling tall tales could backfire as someone is apt to call you on it.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Paint the town red. Put on your best outfit and go have an adventure with your best friends or the object of your heart's desire. Your quick wit and alluring charm will make you a star wherever you choose to go.

PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20): When you rest, you rust. Sitting at home in front of the TV would be a poor substitute when you could go out on the town and spread your social wings. Your closest friends will be eager accomplices in your endeavors.

IF DECEMBER 29 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: Make merry while you make the rounds during the upcoming two to three weeks. Your outgoing friendliness will help you make new alliances and you will be in your element when networking. February is a good time to tackle anything that requires accuracy and a competitive spirit. You will have extra energy at your disposal to overcome the winter blahs. Your serious side may appear in March, when you see the advantages in being organized and methodical. But in early April a romantic fling or a vacation might uplift your spirits. Exert extreme caution in May when you could be led astray by wishful thinking or even deceived by someone unscrupulous. Don't make key decisions or changes until June or July.
